Live: Kasabian, Cold War Kids, Delta Spirit and Mew Rock-Crawl

It's called Rocktober for a reason kids, because, umm, there's a hell of a lot of the Rock.  Last night was no exception as I was running (literally) all over Los Angeles trying to hit all the shows I wanted to see.  Sadly, I did not get to everything I wanted to, but I still had quite an evening.

The evening began at Spaceland in Silverlake where I caught Delta Spirit and Cold War Kids.  Delta Spirit are from San Diego and play music that you would think a band with their moniker might play.  It's bluesy, soulful and most importantly full of the rock.  I was really impressed with them and highly recommend you check out their MySpace page to hear some tunes.  On their piano driven songs they kind of remind me of a louder and faster Spoon, with better harmonies and more attitude.  They were a great match with Cold War Kids, who I thought put on a good show but had to leave after about five songs.  What I noticed most about them is that they seemed to be genuinely excited and proud to play their songs.  I guess that's what happens when you are a young band with a ton of buzz, but it's nice that they can actually step up and deliver.  Oh, and they sing about Jesus stuff a lot, but more in a 70s soulful way than in a Christian Rock way!  They are a very visual band as well, which you can see in the video montage below.  The buzz is real, so embrace it already and stop being a hater!

So the first portion of the Rock-Crawl went splendidly and I can recommend checking out both bands live and recorded.  Here are some goodies from them:

Next I headed over to the Henry Fonda Theater for Mew and Kasabian.  Unfortunately I missed all but the last minute of Mew, but they will be back 10/20 as a headliner.  What can I say about Kasabian?  I get why people hate them.  I do.  I mean they are arrogant, in your face, swarthy or as I like to say British.  Come on, there is a long tradition from Echo and the Bunnymen to the Stone Roses to Oasis of obnoxious over-confident British bands.  Yeah Kasabian aren't nearly as good as any of those bands I just mentioned, but they do have a sound and enough songs to make any performance worth your while.  They made the Henry Fonda a party last night, and people were loving it.  The band was super tight, vocals were dead on, they were really engaging and yes they strut around the stage like they owned the place.  Listen, not all rockers are going to be meek and modest like Sufjan.  It is Rock 'n' Roll after all and in case you forgot it's supposed to have attitude.  So I gotta say that Kasabian are well worth your time to check out live, and if you can let yourself stop thinking about what all the hipsters are saying you might actually realize that you like them.

New Damien Rice

In the news feed there is a link to the 40 Best Musical Moments in Film, and it's inexplicable that "The Blowers' Daughter" by Damien Rice in Closer did not make the list.  The song is peppered throughout the film but is most powerful in the last scene with Natalie Portman walking along the streets of NYC.  Great musical moment in a great film.  If you have been too busy watching Scary Movie 237 for the 32nd time, then perhaps you should check it out.  It's all over Cinemax lately.  Anyway, I digress...

The follow-up to Damien Rice's brilliant debut, titled O,  is due out on November 14th on Heffa/Vector/Warner Bros. records.  The record is called 9 and is sure to be the one record your girlfriend loves that you secretly like even more than her.  Here's the tracklist and a stream (you would be remiss to not listen!) of the first single as well as some MP3s and the video for the afore mentioned "Blowers' Daughter."  More to come soon...

Beck Remixed

Live: The National

The National seem to be one of those bands that is always flying just below the radar.  Not quite accessible enough for mainstream rock and not in tune with the current flavor of the week supported by the indie kids and hipsters.  Don't get me wrong, they have received considerable buzz and their record from last year, titled Alligator, even made it on to some best of the year lists (#2 on mine).  But it feels like they are always an after thought, like everyone knows they are great so we don't need to talk about them.  Or maybe no one really knows about them so we should all start talking about them a whole lot more! 

The band is currently on a mini west coast tour trying out some new material and playing a whole bunch of favorites from their first three records.  I saw them on Monday at the Troubadour and they have another show tonight at the same venue.  Monday night was a big night for music in LA as Sufjan Stevens was playing as well as a bunch of other notable indie acts, so I was quite pleased to see that the National were able to get some people out...although it wasn't close to sold out.  It's a shame that people missed such a solid performance. Vocalist Matt Berninger sounded more assured and smooth with his deep baritone then I have ever heard him before, while the rest of the band performed with their usual precision, making interlocking guitar leads, bass leads, violin solos and muted percussion all flow together seamlessly.  The band seem to have more confidence on stage, which is probably due to touring almost non-stop for the last two years, but still maintain that almost visible sense of tension that permeates so much of heir music. I could go on and on, describe in detail every track they played and gush about how this band should be considered one of the great "art rock" bands of this century...but I have already done that before.  All I can say is that the National get it.  Do you?

How come the British musicians are so much funnier than those here in the States?  I bet the music makers of Canada are hilarious!  We always have Weird Al I guess.

NEW RELEASES - 10.10.06

New music.  Doesn't look like you're going to be able to go to your local Tower Records to buy any of it, as they announced earlier this week that they're going out of business. It's sad that the next generation of music listeners probably won't be able to experience the thrill of going to a store with friends, looking through the vinyl and CD-Single bins and laugh at album covers.  Instead they will sit in front of their computer and browse the iTunes Music Store...wait I have already been doing that for years.  What am I talking about.  This week check out the American re-issue of one of the best records of 2005 called Light at the End of the Tunnel is a Train from Whitey.  Also pick up debut LPs from 120 Days and Cold War Kids.  There's also a really cool DVD/CD from South with live footage and alternate versions from their latest record Adventures in the Underground Journey to the Stars.  One of my favorite records of the year.  Enjoy!
