BONNAROO 2006 RECAP

So I know Bonnaroo was so last week, but I have been traveling and didn't have time to get this up until now.  Unfortunately I was not able to attend the festival myself, but thankfully a faithful LG Music reader acted as our 2006 Bonnaroo Correspondent Festival Goer Person.  His name is Adrian and he is good people, so if you see him buy him a beer and a brat!  Thanks for sacrificing yourself and dealing with the hippies, Adrian.  I wouldn't have lasted an hour...Here's what he had to say about Bonnaroo 2006:

Just a quick write up of the shows that my wife Brooke and I thought rocked and some that sucked from Bonnaroo 2006.

Thursday: This was probably the most exciting day, I hadn’t seen any of these groups before and they were almost universally awesome.

Matt Costa: If you haven’t heard his stuff go check it out, I’d describe it as great “sittin on the deck with a beer” music. He’s got a mellow stage presence but there is lots of heart behind his performance that makes it super accessible. Some might say too accessible. It’s the kind of folksy tunes that everyone knows the words to and sways right and left in solid anticipation of what’s coming next. Needless to say, no one romped over to the stage 100 yards away when the Wood Brothers dove into their set.

Tortured Soul: This three piece funky, driven, looping auditory assault really rocked. This Brooklyn NY based group comprised of a shirt and tie clad keyboardist a bassist and a drummer with more energy than a squirrel on Dexedrine laid it down and the crowd went nuts.

Electric Eel Shock: This Japanese punk band was totally entertaining. They opened with Iron Man, their drummer came to the stage sporting 4 sticks and wearing only a (very large) sock around his junk.

LG MUSIC SHOW: EPISODE #12

By the time you listen to this episode of the LG music Show I will be in Chicago trying to take in as much of the Rock as possible over a four day period.  Posts will be sporadic at best from here on out, but I will try and get as many goodies up for you as I can.  If you're in Chicago, or not, give me a call and maybe we can go get a Brat or something.  mmmm...Old Style.

K-Fed - Just as bad at talking as his wife

Best Week Ever went down to Times Square today where K-Fed was giving a press conference in conjunction with Virgin Mobile to "save the penny."  Apparently Richard Branson's conglomerate is starting a text for a penny program.  In any case, it is almost unbearable listening to Federline try and talk in front of people.  The crowd really seemed to be into it as well.  At least he didn't say "awesome" as many times as Britney did on Dateline.  After the press conference Alex Blagg with BWE got a couple of questions in.  Sorry for wasting your time, but it's like watching a car crash...

Mog.com

So the internet is ablaze with talk of the Mog.  It's pretty much a music-indexing community site. Their software indexes your iTunes music, knows what you last listened to, and notes your top song/album/artist of the week/month. It’s still in Beta and it’s getting a ton of support already from artists and through word of mouth.  Slippy has more on it over in the Suck My Blog.  I just registered, but won't have time to set up my profile until next week.  Check it out and let me know what you think.

PETE DOHERTY DEATHWATCH #19

The good folks over at Stereogum had one of their readers write in with pics of an apparent bar brawl that Pete Doherty got into over the weekend.  I am assuming this was in Sweden as the person who wrote in was from Sweden. Man oh man, PD sure gets around.  I can't wait until he's banned from every European country and has to move to Canada.  They totally deserve him up there.  In related news, the Sun reports that everyones favorite (and most handsome) junkie is publishing a book of "poems, drawings, lyrics and personal reflections."  I am sure the entire thing will be utterly non-sensical, but I have a feeling it will be better than that piece of crap book Corg-on put out a while back!

SUFJAN STEVENS NEWS

Check out the Asthmatic Kitty site to stream the first quarter of the new Sufjan Stevens record, The Avalanche.  They're going to be adding the rest of the record over the next couple of weeks.  In other Sufjan news, he recently talked to Filter about how his "a record for every State project" has created this sense of "civic pride" in a lot of people he talks to...except of course for Florida, as even people who are from there hate it.  If Sufjan were smart he would save Florida for last in hopes that it falls off the continent.  In any case, Pitchfork's hero also told Filter that he has decided what State he is going to do next, but it keeping it secret.  Does anyone know (from a good source) what State?  Also, what State would you like to hear?  I am going to say Wisconsin.  Wisconsin rules.

LIVE: THE FRENCH KICKS AND FUTUREHEADS

Last night I went to the Henry Fonda Theater in Hollywood to see the French Kicks and the Futureheads.  The theater itself is probably the nicest I have been to out here and the sound was top notch.  The main room at capacity holds close to 1000 people, and while the show wasn't sold out, it was close.  They also have an upstairs balcony with a wall that acts as a video screen as well as a full bar and couches for hipsters to lounge upon.  It's so LA.

I haven't seen the French Kicks in a number of years, but they sounded pretty much the same to my old years.  They remind me of a combination of the Walkmen and Snow Patrol.  Yeah the Walkmen thing is kinda easy, and their music doesn't so much sound like Snow Patrol but the singer reminds me a lot of Gary Lightbody.  They worked through a set of about 45 minutes, with a varying response from the crowd.  They have a new record called Two Thousand out on July 18th, so a lot of the material they played I hadn't heard yet.  Overall I thought it was a solid set, but nothing to go crazy about.  I think they should stick to smaller venues as it's easier for their "energy" to translate in such a setting.  Oh, and French Kicks might have the best t-shirts.  Someone please send me one.

I have written about the Futureheads live show on a number of occasions, and all I have to say is that they get better each and every time.  I am not a die hard fan of their studio recordings, I mean I like both records, but live it is just so more powerful.  They are all incredibly talented and the hooks in the songs just seem to pop more when you're watching them.  As usual their harmonies were dead on and the "call and response" vocals make for a nice change throughout the set.  The band also seems to have grown up a bit on stage and were much more willing to talk to the crowd and to get them to actively participate.  If you have not seen the Futureheads before, or if you have seen them but are thinking about skipping this tour, I highly urge you to reconsider.  There are so few great live bands around that missing one of them would be a shame.
