3 DAY WEEKENDS ARE COOL, BUT 7 DAY WEEKENDS ARE BETTER

So yeah I am excited for Memorial Day Weekend, but not because I get three days "off" of "work," but because it's kind of the unofficial start of summer...oh and I FINALLY get to wear my white pants. They are hot.

Anyway, like many other foolish people I am going to leave the hustle and bustle of the downtown and head up to "the lake" for the weekend. Of course it will rain like it does every year, but Old Style and Brats taste just as good in the rain as they do in the sun. In any case, I got to thinking about summer and thought I would suggest a couple of Dub/Reggae records for your listening pleasure. However, I must first say that contrary to popular belief these records sound just as good in the Winter as they do in the Summer. Yeah, I know then why am I posting this now? Well because I feel like it, so shut up and go find these records:

Augustus Pablo - East of the River Nile - You can check out some of his other stuff, including tracks from this record on iTunes.

I-Roy - Don't Check Me With No Lightweight Stuff (1972-1975) - The jokers over at iTunes don't have this record, but they have another career spanning collection called Touting I Self that is awesome in it's own right. iTunes

King Tubby and Augustus Pablo - Meets Rockers Uptown - I really can't believe that this record is not on iTunes, because it's an absolute classic. Probably my favorite of all the records I've mentioned. If you want to get a sampling of King Tubby before you pick up this record you can find some song on iTunes.

Bob Marley - Songs of Freedom (Especially Discs 1 and 2... the acoustic medley on disc 2 is insane). No iTunes version available.

Various Artists - Punky Reggae Party - This is an incredible compilation form Trojan/Sanctuary released back in 2002. iTunes

So this is just a sampling and an introduction for those of you unfamiliar with the genre. If anyone wants other recommendations, or has some suggestions for me, please post a comment.

Lots of good times "summer music" out this week...does "summer music" exist for those of you that don't live in an area that has drastic seasons, or do you just call it "music?" Just curious. Annie's debut record, titled Anniemal, was one of my favorites of 2004. Thankfully the record will finally see it's release here in the U.S. on June 7. The Sun are a group from Columbus, OH who apparently like bicycles. They also have a real nice website, so make sure to check it out. Their debut record, Blame It On The Youth, is out this fall on Warner Brothers Records and was produced by Ben Hiller (Blur, Doves, Elbow) and John Goodmanson (Sleater-Kinney and Hot Hot Heat)...quite a combination.

What a week! Man do I have a rough life. I mean it's not easy to see great live music four nights in a row, it really isn't. First off I have lost hearing in my left ear, and to make matters even worse my equilibrium is shot from a combination of excessive drunkenness and head-splitting hangovers. I must say though, it was well worth it. Wednesday night I saw the Killers at a venue called the Riviera here in Chicago. I thought they put on quite a show, and man alive were there some screaming girls in attendance. The funny thing is that Monkey was shrieking louder than anyone...I think it was Brandon Flowers lipstick and prancing around the stage that made him lose it. Oh, and a certain large-sunglasses wearing Irish singer of a certain biggest band in the world was in the guest box pounding Red Bulls and singing along. You know you've made it when Bono is nodding his head to your songs...here's the set list.

I thought all of the songs off of their debut record, Vehicles and Animals, were awesome...crazy keyboards and all. Unfortunately I don't have a set list for them, but I do have one for Snow Patrol who I've seen a number of times and who never fail to put on a great show. Here it is...
