If you watch TV you've heard a song by this band at least 117 times over the last couple of months. You see Caesars have a song called "Jerk It Out" that Apple has mercilessly assaulted our ears with for their iPod Shuffle commercials. At least they used a good song, right? NEWS - WHITE STRIPES AND M.I.A.

WHITE STRIPES

The handsomest band in Detroit (Kid Rock was a close second) are back with their long awaited new record. It's the band's fifth LP, titled Get Behind Me Satan, and it's out on Third Man Records/V2 Records on June 7th 2005. I know that seems like forever, but you can download the first single, "Blue Orchid," at iTunes or you can stream it right here. M.I.A.

I think I've posted about M.I.A. before, and if I haven't then I apologize. At this point all of my friends (errr, Mom and Dad) are sick of hearing me talk about this record, so I figured it was time to find another outlet. This is definitely one of my favorites of the year so far and will probably be the soundtrack to summer 2005 for many-a-hipster across the land. The debut record, Arular, came out on March 22nd so I suggest you go and pick it real soon like. You can also get it at iTunes if you are like totally digital. RECORD REVISITED - SEVEN MORE MINUTES

I could never imagine living in a city where there weren't drastic temperature changes and distinct seasons...it just seems so boring. People always ask me how I manage to stay sane during the long, dark and bitter cold winters of Chicago, and for the longest time I could never answer them. Then a couple of years ago I realized that the reason winter didn't bother me so much was because I was always looking forward to that first day in April (hopefully) or May when the mercury creeps over 70 degrees, limes are added to all beverages and the smell of Winter is replaced by Spring. Well like most music obsessed people, I have a soundtrack for pretty much everything and the reemergence of the sun after months of exile is no exception. To me some music just sounds better when you can open the windows and have everyone hear it. The Rentals sophomore effort, Seven More Minutes, is such a record. Released in 1999 the record was the first for frontman Matt Sharp after his departure from Weezer in 1998. While the comparisons to his former band are both inevitable and warranted, the sound of the Rentals is much closer to Pinkerton-era Weezer than any of their other music. I like to think of this record as what Weezer would have sounded like if they were a brit-pop band. This could be because of all the European references throughout the record, the inclusion of Damon Albarn of Blur on a couple of tracks or maybe it's just that the songs are infectious, catchy and cool all at the same time. Whatever it is, this record still remains one of my favorite "warm-weather" selections. It's great from start to finish, but check out "Barcelona," "Big Daddy C," "She Says It's Alright" and "Getting By" to start with. I have the windows open, the record playing and I think it's about time to go cut up a lime! iTunes

Supersystem, formerly known as El Guapo, are a DC/NY quartet that have explored trance, punk and old-fashioned dance tracks. Their Touch and Go debut, Always Never Again, finds its way into new territory yet again. Even if you don't think you like this type of music you should check out the video...they really do have a unique sound.

The National are five friends from Cincinnati, OH, who now live in Brooklyn. They just released their debut record, Alligator, on Beggars Banquet. It kind of sounds like a more melancholy/less angry Interpol, or maybe it doesn't. Check out their audio player and decide for yourself.

THE DECEMBERISTS

There are two types of people in the world; those who love the Decemberists and those who hate them. They are definitely one of those bands that no one thinks is "just ok." So if you are a fan then check out this video from their latest record, and if you haven't heard them before then here's your chance to see which side of the fence you are on. Check out this blurb from their bio...if you ask me (or if you don't) I think it's pretty hilarious:

The Decemberists show us that life is ultimately a spectacular and colorful pageant. They remind us that, on any given day, we might rub shoulders with rogue spies and runaway prostitutes, child monarchs and vengeful mariners, boy ghosts, couples contemplating suicide, cannibals and drowning angels. This existence is indeed a spectacle to be revered.

REGINA SPEKTOR, MY LOVE

I went to go see Regina Spektor last night at Schubas in Chicago. I first saw this Russian-born, Brookyln-bred Communist Spy/Pianist on Conan O'Brien a couple months ago and was blown away. Just a girl and her piano, playing songs that are hilarious, melodramatic, morbid but all extremely emotional and moving. I never really listened to Tori Amos, but I've heard people say Spektor far different, edgier. More fun. I definitely think she's cuter. She's really playful when she sings, and I love the way so she tends to overprounounce words...maybe it's the Russian in her? Maybe it's the Broolyn? Nobody knows, but she's my favorite singer right now. Her album Soviet Kitch is highly recommended.
