Worst 50 Songs - Not a bad list, but how could anyone think that Right Said Fred recorded anything bad in their career. They were true artists. You could also call this list "The Best One Hit Wonders of the last 15 Years."

50 Essential Pop Records from Slant Magazine - Pretty good list, but some of these records could have got a song on the above list, i.e. Chaka Kahn. Also, way too many females here...I personally don't mind Cheryl Crow or Sarah McLachlan but neither one of them has EVER made an essential pop record. IMHO of course.

Music-Map - The tourist map to music.

The Most Expensive Album Never Made - Great article in the NY Times about the Guns N' Roses/Axl Rose record The Chinese Democracy. At this point does anyone even really want to hear it? I think not.

MP3Gain - I haven't tried this yet, but it is certainly something that would make DJing with, or for that matter just listening, to .mp3s. If anyone's used it let me know how it worked.

Summer Sonic Festival - If you have some spare change laying around, you might want to think about going to Japan for this incredible festival to be held Aug. 13-14 in Tokyo and Osaka.

WEEZER

After what seems like years of delays, Weezer have finally announced that their fifth studio record, Make Believe, will be released in the U.S. on May 10. The tracklist for the record is not yet available, but you can see the new video for the first single "Beverly Hills" here. The band will also be taking to the road in April:

OASIS

Wouldn't it be nice if Oasis released another good record? Definitely Maybe and What's The Story were so good that for years now Oasis have been forgiven their blunders and sub-par releases. Well the band has announced that their latest LP titled Don't Believe The Truth, will be released on May 31 in North America and May 30 in the rest of the world. The first single off the record, "Lyla," will hit the airwaves a couple of weeks earlier on May 16. Here's the tracklist:

GORILLAZ

The highly anticipated follow up to the Gorillaz 2001 self-titled debut is inching ever closer. The band announced that the Danger Mouse/Damon Albarn produced record, titled Demon Days, will see a release on May 24. This record is reportedly a bit darker than the animated group’s dubby-nickelodeon debut, and will also feature a number of guest performances from the likes of Dennis Hopper, De La Soul, MF Doom, Ike Turner, the Happy Mondays' Shaun Ryder, Roots Manuva and the London Community Gospel Choir. SXSW 2005 RECAP

The undisputed best music festival in the U.S. (and quite possibly the world) took place in Austin last week and ended yesterday much to the relief of the livers of all involved. Unfortunately I was not able to make it to SXSW this year, but I am pretty sure of three things:

1. There were way too many shows to see, and way too much time was spent running from venue to venue trying to see "the one band you have to see this year."

2. Beer is really good, but at 2 PM on Thursday after your 37th can of Lonestar it's OK to want some water.

3. BBQ is delicious anytime of the day, but at 3:30 AM it's heavenly.

While I was stuck in the endless winter of Chicago, I had friends that were soaking up the sun in Austin. They discovered some new stuff and saw a bunch of favorites. Here are just a few of the bands they thought were great:

TOUR DATES AND MORE

It looks like March and April are shaping up to be great months for live music. I think it's awesome how many bands from the UK and the rest of Europe are making it over to the States for SXSW this year. Not only is it hands down the best music festival in the U.S., but it also gives bands that otherwise wouldn't have the chance to tour over here the opportunity to do so. Check it out:

THE BLUE VAN - This Danish quartet sounds like they've been trapped in a vacuum since 1969. It's refreshing to hear a pop/rock band NOT influenced by the Jesus and Mary Chain, Joy Division, XTC or Television. These guys stick to the classics, the Beatles, Stones and Kinks...and they do it really well. I've only heard this one track, and it's fantastic. If you are one of the lucky few that will have a chance to see them live, I suggest you do so.

VIDEO - LOUIS XIV

Hey check out this video for Louis XIV's latest single, "Finding Out True Love is Blind." It was filmed at director Chris Hopewell's (Radiohead, Franz Ferdinand) Bristol, England studio. It's pretty cool as rock videos go.

I. Initially comprised of Jason Hill (producer/vocalist/guitarist/pianist), Brian Karscig (guitarist/vocalist/pianist), and Mark Maigaard (drummer), San Diego, CA- based rock band Louis XIV began in April 2003.

II. In the interest of changing things up, and a mantra of "Let's not overthink it, let's just go record it," Hill and the band opted to head to Paris. The initial recording sessions took place in a friend's flat, which housed a late-60's model, 16-track tape recorder - identical to the one the band had back in San Diego. The three musicians packed up some equipment - a vintage Studer console, a few favorite microphones - and headed to France.

III. The sessions were loose and spontaneous, with the band recording as few takes as possible. Two weeks later, the band returned to San Diego. They put a few finishing touches on the unrefined tracks, and their debut album, LOUIS XIV, was complete.

IV. After the band posted a few MP3s from LOUIS XIV on their newly opened website (www.louisxiv.net), local radio began playing one of the tracks, "God Killed The Queen." Much to the band's surprise, their personal project had struck a populist chord.

V. A cheap CD burner was purchased and the band started their own label - the Pineapple Recording Group - selling over 500 copies of LOUIS XIV in the first month. The word soon spread across the Atlantic, and tracks from the album were all over BBC Radio 1, getting spins from such influential DJs as Mary Anne Hobbs and Zane Lowe. Before the band knew it, they were heading to London for the annual NME Awards.

VI. Upon their return to the U.S., Louis XIV - now including bassist James Armbrust - built on their buzz with a roof-raising gig at the annual South By Southwest music conference. A month later, the band flew back to Britain to perform live on Mary Anne Hobbs's TV program, "Jamz." The trip also saw the band playing their first European gig to a packed house at London's infamous drag bar-slash-rock venue, Madam Jo Jo's.

VII. While Louis XIV was away in the UK, their fanbase at home continued to grow. San Diego radio station 91X had gotten their hands on a rough mix of one of Louis XIV's new recordings, "Finding Out True Love Is Blind." Radio airplay resulted in soaring record sales - despite the fact that the song wasn't even included on the album. The band decided to release a pair of EPs - dubbed Pink EP and Blue EP - featuring a few faves from LOUIS XIV, along with a handful of their latest recordings.

VIII. Summer 2004 saw Louis XIV, still unsigned, join The Killers on the road. As they traveled America, sales of the album and EPs exploded, with more than 10,000 CDs going out around the world.

IX. In August 2004, Louis XIV signed with Atlantic Records.

X. January 2005 saw the release of the band's Illegal Tender EP on their Pineapple Recording Group, this time with distribution via ADA. The 5-song set included the single, "Finding Out True Love Is Blind," which, by then, had become a bonafide hit at alternative radio.

XI. The band's major label debut, The Best Little Secrets Are Kept, was produced, recorded and engineered by Jason Hill. The set pairs songs from their self-released album and EPs along with new material, recorded in November/December 2004 at the band's San Diego studio, built specifically for the recordings in a refurbished urban church.
